UFO-8 (USA-138)

UFO-8 (USA-138) Background and technical overview.

HOME  > OPERATIONAL > MODES & FREQUENCIES > SATELLITES - RADIO TARGETS >

Contemporary documentation describes the UFO satellites as having approximately 21 × 5-kHz narrowband channels, 17 × 25-kHz channels and a 25-kHz fleet broadcast channel.

There is documented unauthorized/pirate radio activity on the UFO satellite family, and there are specific reports associated with UFO-8. However, the evidence is much stronger for some UFO satellites than others.

Details

Satellite: UFO-8 (USA-138)
Norad ID: 25258
Operator: US Navy
Status: Operational, however superseded by MUOS.
Frequency Range: 240.0 - 270.0 MHz VHF Down Link

Ka-band Global Broadcast Service (GBS) downlinks are documented as 20.295, 20.415, 20.475 and 20.595 GHz

Mode: FM
Altitude [km]: 35,800km Geosynchronous, near-equatorial at Longitude 149.68
Tracking: https://www.n2yo.com/?s=25258

Channel confirmation was achieved by monitoring the channel frequency for consistency with the band plan, verifying the bandwidth and antenna targeting to assess the SNR (signal-to-noise ratio).
