LES-1 (Lincoln Experimental Satellite 1)

LES-1 was the first of the Lincoln Experimental Satellites, built by MIT Lincoln Laboratory for the U.S. Air Force. It launched from Cape Canaveral on 11 February 1965 aboard a Titan IIIA.

Its purpose was to test technologies for reliable military satellite communications, particularly X-band communications around 7–8 GHz.

Unfortunately, the launch didn't go completely according to plan. A solid-fuel motor intended to move LES-1 into its operational orbit failed to ignite. The satellite therefore remained in a roughly 2,800 km circular orbit and began tumbling. 

LES-1 was effectively abandoned and its transmitter stopped operating in 1967. It then remained silent for approximately 45 years.

In December 2012, radio amateurs unexpectedly detected a signal from LES-1 at 237 MHz.

The most likely explanation is that deterioration of the spacecraft's batteries/circuitry allowed solar-panel power to reach the telemetry transmitter directly. Consequently, the transmitter can operate when the satellite is illuminated by the Sun only.
